How to Clean Travertine Floors Properly

Travertine is a timeless natural stone material that is popular amongst many interior designers and homeowners- and for good reasons. With its gorgeous earthy tones and luxurious appeal, travertine can be applied to many homes or establishments, as it ensures to blend well with a variety of different design elements. Best of all, travertine is an incredibly durable and long-lasting material. All in all, it comes as no surprise to find why many choose to use travertine in their home.

Travertine flooring is a great idea for homeowners wanting to add a touch of class to their interior design. Being easy to grip and walk on, the non-slip texture of travertine tiles also makes them a practical choice for your home. Of course, as with most other natural stone materials, it’s important to maintain and upkeep travertine floors properly if you want them to continue looking as best as they can.

To help you get the most out of your travertine floors, we’ve set out everything you need to know on how to clean travertine floors properly:

Step One – Give it a Sweep

The first thing you should do when it comes to cleaning your travertine floors is to remove any loose dirt or dust. Give your floors a good sweep with a broom or dustpan, then dispose of the collected debris. Sweeping before mopping will prevent you from pushing around dirt, dust, and other gunk.

Step Two – Prepare the Solution

The next thing to do is prepare the solution you’ll use to clean your travertine floors. Luckily, this solution is nothing special- just warm water and a pH neutral cleanser are highly effective at breaking down soil and grease. Just make sure to steer clear of alkaline and acidic based cleaners. This includes products such as citrus or vinegar as well. If you use these to clean any sort of natural stone material, you could risk causing damage by etching the surface or causing the colour to fade. You can generally find cleaning products formulated specifically for cleaning travertine surfaces.

Step Three – Dip, Wring and Wipe

When mopping your travertine floors, make sure that you’re wringing the mop out fully after dipping it into the cleaning solution. Travertine is a porous material, meaning that it has heaps of little holes in its surface that we can’t always exactly see. This high porosity also makes travertine vulnerable to water infiltration, which can lead to damage if it’s not considered. This is why it’s so important to make sure that you’re using a damp mop that has been wrung out, rather than a mop that’s soaking wet.

Step Four – Rinse

After you’ve run over your floors with the mop, chuck the old solution out and refill the bucket with clean, cold water. Then, run over your floors once more with the clean water, making sure to thoroughly wring out the mop each time you dip it in.

Step Five – Dry

To prevent streaks from drying and remove any remaining water, the final step is to dry your floors using a soft, clean cloth.

Cleaning your travertine floors properly is not a difficult task. Most importantly, it will help to keep your floors looking and holding up as well as it possibly can over the years. Putting in the effort for natural stone products is always worth it. After all, they ensure to tick all the boxes when it comes to providing unique style, value, practicality, and durability.
